This week, Young Turks and Sampha hosted a World exclusive premiere of the film Process at London’s Institute of Contemporary Art followed by screenings at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Underground Museum and The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Starting today, Process is now finally available to watch exclusively on Apple Music.
Directed by Kahlil Joseph (Pulse Films), the 37 minute film is a beautifully shot widescreen visual contextualisation of Sampha’s stunning debut album of the same name.
At once broad and specific, the film suggests the greater power and magic of one’s soul and the closeness of one’s ancestors once those relationships are acknowledged.
Filmed in January 2017, Process is located across both Freetown, Sierra Leone and Morden in South London, places which not only resonate personally with Sampha but also reflect rich and contrasting images from both countries and cultures. Capturing a duality visualised through the stunning cinematography, the film is illuminated with a rich palette of colour in each location. Shot and framed between Freetown, Sampha’s parent’s hometown of origin (the city where many of the Sisay family still reside) and Morden in outer London, (a suburb that Sampha grew up in after his parents relocated to the UK) it’s an inspirational work in film. Process’s subtle narrative, cuts from crop circle dance formations to the ethereal landscapes of Siera Leone all beautifully weaved together by short musical performances from Sampha across both locations – at it’s core it is a simple love letter from a son to his mother.
Enlisting LA artist and filmmaker Kahlil Joseph, the Emmy and Grammy nominated director famed for his work with some of the world’s most exciting and forward-thinking artists, including Beyonce (‘Lemonade’), Flying Lotus (‘Until The Quiet Comes’), FKA twigs (‘Video Girl’) and Kendrick Lamar (‘m.A.A.d’).
On the film Process, Sampha says “It’s been a genuine pleasure collaborating with Khalil on this film. He has such a unique visual language and has found such a beautiful way to tell this story.”
Sampha is unquestionably one of the UK’s most unique singer/songwriter, performer and producer, with extensive and impressive collaborations and contributions certifying his status as one of the premiere homegrown artists of this generation.
