In what is quickly being regarded as one of the busiest festival periods in recent memory, another massive festival has thrown its name in the hat with what might be one of the strongest line ups in Europe! Splash! – the name behind the biggest hip hop and reggae festival in Germany – has released the full line-up and with an array of acts from all over Europe and the US, Splash! 2019 is shaping up to be the epic weekender to attend.
Nation of Billions have been invited to the open air museum that is Ferropolis, just an hour south from Berlin, to experience what Splash has to offer. This will take place over 11th– 13thJuly, with this in mind, we have drawn up a preview to let you know what’s in store.
Since 1998, Splash have been at the forefront of displaying the rich cultures of hip hop, dancehall and reggae music, whilst giving local German acts a platform to rock the stage. In its 21st year of operation, the scale of this event has grown from an inaugural crowd of 1,300 in a former powerhouse to hosting tens of thousands of festival goers in what is regarded as one of Germany’s best kept secrets. With a list of former headliners that include Kano, Tyler, The Creator, J. Cole, Post Malone and Just Blaze, it is not hard to understand why Splash! Festival has been so popular. This year’s full line up has just been announced and it is their biggest yet!
Over the course of three days, a variety of acts from the UK, US and Europe will rock the various stages at the dystopian-feeling venue that is more Mad Max than Sunset Valley. From the UK, North London’s own Little Simz will take us into her Grey Area as she takes the Splash! Beach stage on Thursday. Across the weekend, she will be joined by other big names such as Yung Fume, Yxng Bane and Skepta, who will dust off bangers from his recent Ignorance is Bliss album on Snipes Main Stage. From across the pond, a nice blend of heavy hitters and emerging talent dominate the billing as the American acts prove to be an easy sell to German natives.
Assuming that A$AP Rocky will be out of Swedish police custody, the A$AP Mob’s de-facto leader will be TESTING the resolve of the main stage crowd with some of his most popular records to date. TDE will be well represented in the form of Jay Rock and ScHoolboy Q, while Future, Gunna, Saint Jhn, J.I.D and many more are sure to deliver great sets. In spite of the great American contingent that will be present, Splash doesn’t disappoint locals hoping to witness German artists perform as this year is no different in providing a key platform for their homegrown acts to shine. Deutsch rappers Trettman, SSIO and LGoony will fly the flag among others that will surely excite the home crowd.
Those of you that attended Wireless festival last weekend probably wish that there were a cool lake to dip in as the heat took control of proceedings. Splash Festival is unique in the sense that it is based on the peninsula of the Gremmin Lake. With this in mind, you can picture taking a cool dip in the lake as you see some of your favourite acts perform. In short, Splash looks to live up to its rep as Germany’s premier urban festival and we will be right there to tell you all about in a review that will detail what will go down!
