Sonder Sail With A Sultry Debut ‘Into’

It’s always special when a group of artists can come together, gel musically and create something original. Sonder consist of singer Brent Faiyaz and producers Atu and Dpat; together they bless the music world with a angelic R&B holy trinity.

Inviting us into Sonder’s world, the ‘Into’ 7 track EP kicks off with a slow-burning stripped back track called ‘Feel’. Opening with Faiyaz’s vocal caress, the track merged with Atu and Dpat’s glistening production is a perfect introduction to their R&B symphony. Fading from ‘Feel’ into ‘Lovely’, from the first chord it’s a vision of musical richness, filled with depth. The eerie backing vocals from Faiyaz are almost trance like and the bassline resiliently hypnotizing, so much so that you’ll find yourself completely in their spell immediately.

If you’ve never heard of Sonder, by the third track it will become abundantly clear that the trio are diverse musically. ‘Sirens’ transcends musical genres, showcasing a group who are willing to take musical risks. Changing up the pace of the EP, the minimal beat flows into Faiyaz’s ethereal vocals, picking up the tempo as the crescendos catch you off guard and then there’s the seamless transition between ‘Sirens’ and ‘Too Fast’ that highlight the group’s musicality impeccably.

The trio exhibit a true mark of their musicianship mixing in live instrumentation with bass, drums, keys and strings and after cooling down with the sixth track, ‘Searchin’, we’re back on the Sonder journey. The closing song ‘Care’, is a perfect end to an EP that can only be described as majestic. A standout track, ‘Care’ evokes a feeling synonymous with R&B music of the 90’s/early 2000’s.

Sonder’s debut EP ‘Into’ is a sonic testament to the trio’s authenticity; you’re bound to have the EP on loop for the foreseeable future. It shows just how much they understand music and the depth of their musical choices seep into the uniqueness of each song. Brent Faiyaz, Atu and Dpat are 2017’s R&B dream team; if you haven’t paid attention to Sonder yet, now is the time.
