Jorja Smith is like an angel. Not only does she have the face and voice of one, but as we’ve discovered, she’s also one of the few female UK artists who’s been known to devote lyrical content to societal issues. The Midlands born singer gained attention with her self-released ‘Blue Lights’ earlier this year – a relevant track about racial discrimination towards young black men (which was later nominated for ‘Best Song’ at the MOBO awards).
Since then, she’s released a few more tunes about life and love (with quirky accompanying videos), played Wireless, AfroPunk London, supported NAO and collaborated with the likes of Maverick Sabre and Cadenza.
With all this anticipation on a high, what’s next for her? This week Jorja’s dropped a new tune, ‘Something In The Way’ featured on her forthcoming new EP ‘Project 11’. The smooth track proves why both Jorja’s vocal and song-writing abilities are all the rave and had us hooked from the first note. Giving us Amy Winehouse vibes (who she idolises and has been on compared to on numerous occasions) – the track touches on failed relationships and truly demonstrates her soul factor, with a nice little guitar solo in there too.
“I wrote it with the other songs about a year and a half ago. I sang classical at school so I always like putting elements—like Prince always has classical elements—so, with this song, you don’t really know what to expect with all these operatic sounds. And then it goes into a bit of attitude -I’m giving a bit of attitude on this song.”
‘Project 11’ features four new tracks and will be available from Friday – followed by Jorja’s first headline tour, which includes sold-out shows in London, Manchester and Birmingham.
