‘Straight Outta Compton’ is currently on its way to the Number 1 spot in the UK’s official charts this week, with the release of the DVD/Blu-ray reaching sales of almost 33,000 at it’s mid-week numbers. Now with a Oscar nomination secured, the top spot looks even more likely.
The N.W.A biopic, chronically the rise of the most controversial Hip-Hop group in history, telling the story of its members, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, MC Ren and DJ Yella has secured an Oscar nomination in the Original Screenplay category. Although overlooked at the Golden Globes, talk of an Oscar nomination has been rife since the positive reception of the film and high box office numbers.
The Oscar nominations announced today also included nods for Sylvester Stallone for best supporting actor in ‘Creed‘, The Weekend for ‘Earned It’ as best original song for ’50 Shades of Grey’, Sam Smith for ‘Writing’s on the Wall’ for ‘Spectre’ and two music documentaries including “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and the Asif Kapadia directed British documentary ‘Amy’ about Amy Whinehouse.
Notable omissions from the nominations of the cast of ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and Idris Elba for his role in ‘Beast of No Nation’, has already generated criticism on social media #OscarsSoWhite.
Hosted by Chris Rock the Academy Awards will be televised live on February 28.
