Don’t call it a resurgence, even though Grime has over 10 years rolling deep, 2015 proved the force is still strong in the scene. Stormzy had the industry gatekeepers ‘Shut Up’ and pay attention as a certified problem, surging into the U.K’s Top 10 independent of radio. Skepta, well he ‘Shutdown’ pretty much every naysayer, slaying the festival circuit in 2015, and kicking off 2016 on the bill at Coachella.
While this year we’re likely to see hotly anticipated albums from both Skepta and Stormzy, there’s a new breed in the Grime scene and make no mistake, some of the most exciting MC’s are rising up from the South and already taking it global. From Deptford by way of Lewisham, South London’s latest ‘Golden Boy’, had his debut single premiered as Zane Lowe’s record of the day on Beats 1 and pushed out from L.A across the world.
As a founding member of South East London’s The Square, which previously hailed the now departed Novelist, Elf Kid is charging forward proudly as Lewisham’s ‘Golden Boy’ with a video that’s catching fire faster than the speed of a London Bus.
Sampling Amerie’s ‘One Thing’, the 19 year old has straight up executed a swift masterplan, stacking bars over Lolingo’s production and pushing out a video that’s got him and his boys rolling through his Lewisham Estate, from the High Street into Deptford Market and well because why not – sitting on top of a bus stop!
Currently studying Business at University, Elf was working on an essay when Zane Lowe premiered ‘Golden Boy’ on Beats 1, and while he’s firmly putting studying before music till he’s got his degree – there’s gonna be “no dilly, no dally”!
Wasting no time, Elf Kid caught up with Julie Adenuga for an interview at the Beats 1 Studio in London yesterday, chopping it up about the single and his plans moving forward;
2016 is already going off like a stonker in the kind of way that pretty much says “F**K You we’re keeping it local” and Elf Kid is Next Up in the 2016 league of Nation as our local Grime golden boy.
