‘Pimp, pimp – hooray!‘ – Kendrick Lamar gone dun did it and just landed us all into deep water with a new album that’s arrived with little to no warning – simply ‘untitled unmastered’ of 8 tracks recorded since 2013 to this year.
Each track is ‘untitled’ and at a running time of 34.06 minutes this is a project that will have us sitting back in deep rumination, thank god it’s Friday.
Explanations just seem to evade us when it comes to understanding how these tracks ended up in the vault or the cutting floor – but masterfully compiled together they are an articulate insight into the deeper state of Kendrick Lamar. Subject to the score and scope of Kendricks catalogue so far, this album adds another twist, giving us the previously performed ‘untitled 03’ from Kendrick’s December 2014 appearance on The Colbert Report; ‘untitled 08’ from this January’s 2016 performance on Jimmy Fallon; and his most recent performance at the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards show.
As for every other ‘untitled’ track – mercy me on my mortal mind!
‘untitled unmastered’ arrives as an official release on Top Dawg/Aftermath/Interscope Records and is available to download on iTunes and stream on Tidal, Apple Music and Spotify. Rumours had already been rife since Top Dawg head man Anthony Tiffith dropped an insta with Kendrick’s name on the board for 2016 releases, but an early leak of the album cover on Spotify on Thursday night, has us wondering if this was some thinly veiled attempt by the streaming service to feign exclusivity and get a head start.
Following on from his deserved 4 Grammy wins and undeserved miss of the ‘Album of the Year’, this is certified proof of the elevated excellence of Lamar even when it’s simply delivered with just a whisper.
We said it once and we’ll say it again, 2016 is a future vintage year in the making for Hip-Hop, expect the unexpected. With yet more releases expected from Drake and another album from Kanye now announced, what a time….
