After dropping ‘LSD’ with Chance The Rapper last week, Jamila Woods has swiftly followed up with the release of her 13 track project ‘HEAVN’ – and it’s time to get uplifted.
Chicago singer, songwriter, and poet Jamila Woods, is simply luminous on her new album ‘HEAVN’, radiating all that #blackgirlmagic from track to track. Smooth, laid back, sweet, and stellar indeed, Jamila flows effortlessly through the album that’s balanced to heavenly perfection. All the right features and all the right instrumentation, bring together a collective spirit that Jamila channels with just the right soulful jazz notes. Featuring her Chicago compadres Chance the Rapper, Donnie Trumpet, Saba, NoName and including production from oddCouple, Peter Cottontale, Carter Lang and Nate Fox, this is the sound of music.
‘HEAVN’ sets a path for this moment in time with a moving call for poetic justice – ‘Blk Girl Soldier’, ‘LSD’ as well as the standouts ‘VERY BLK’ with NoName and ‘Breadcrumbs’ ft Donnie Trumpet are just magical.
“HEAVN is about black girlhood, about Chicago, about the people we miss who have gone on to prepare a place for us somewhere else, about the city/world we aspire to live in. I hope this album encourages listeners to love themselves and love each other. For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. It is a necessary and radical part of the struggle to create a more just society. Our healing and survival are essential to the fight.”
A member of the original Save Money collective alongside Chance, Vic, Towkio and co, Jamila came to worldwide attention with her feature on Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment’s ‘Sunday Candy’, following up with another impressive feature on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s ‘White Privilege II’, and most recently on Chance’s ‘Coloring Book‘ with ‘Blessings’.
