Love songs trigger emotional feelings and those memories of past or current relationships. When a singer captures these feelings and vocalizes them on beautiful music, it’s an experience that you will always remember. In 2016, American singer-songwriter H.E.R. captured my attention and continued to do that throughout 2017 with her 2nd project – Vol.2 – and the additional songs which served her well during her US tour.
Just as the year was coming to a close, H.E.R. tweeted a Soundcloud link to a new song that would result in me dancing by myself in my living room. ‘My Song’, the latest offering from the R&B artist hailing from California, starts with a piano introduction which immediately sets the tone and provides the foundation for H.E.R.’s voice to start in the lower tonal range. She continues to demonstrate her ability to move through different sounds and once again, uses her voice to explore different pitches with confidence. The omission of percussion in ‘My Song’ is not missed as the gentle acoustic ballad develops as the seconds pass by.
The words are sung with power and strength. Whatever experience H.E.R. is drawing from to deliver this level of intimacy must’ve been an important one. I’m reminded of ballads from Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey’s acoustic offerings when listening to H.E.R descriptively express the love she feels for her significant other. The purity and delicacy of this song belongs in a ballet as the soundtrack for a dancers solo.
In March, H.E.R. is bringing her live show overseas and gracing our city for the European leg of her tour. With the first show selling out in minutes, a second date has been added. ‘My Song’ will be alongside some other great songs which has earned her supporters worldwide and will be an amazing song to see performed live. Although I will be in a crowded venue, I will be undoubtedly singing ‘My Song’ like I’m back in my living room.
