The vote in favour of leaving Europe is a result that we will have to live with for the rest of our lives. There is nothing but uncertainty. The politicians that generated the fog of mis-information in favour of Brexit do not know what happens next, they cannot guarantee the security and stability of the UK. The public who voted to leave do not know the implications of what they have done. Rapper/producer Adian Coker shares his thoughts…
“I’m a great believer in the power of the people, societal pressure; a firm advocate of people taking their destinies into their own hands. But today I question that belief and wonder if, actually, our society is far too stupid to be entrusted with decisions as important as this.
A toxic combination of ignorance and fear mongering has led us here.
I woke to news that left me seriously disheartened, gutted even. Incredulous messages from my peoples asking ‘what’s gonna happen to our country’? A couple funny meme’s to be fair. But 75% of 18-25 year olds voted to remain. Those who understand the importance the EU holds for jobs, investment and export, trade and democracy. Yet 58% of those aged 65+ voted to leave. Those with an average of just 16 years left to live have made THE biggest decision this country has made in decades, and it is us and future generations that will have to endure the experiment.
A toxic combination of ignorance and fear(mongering) has led us here. And even if, after the dust settles and the markets stabilise etcetera etcetera, we emerge (relatively) unscathed, the principles that this country thrives on, has been at the forefront of even; multiculturalism, individual liberty, tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, will likely be held up for scrutiny.
Advocacy of xenophobia by megalomaniacs whose interests are prefixed by the word ‘self’ has prevailed, and there’s no doubt that we are all worse off for it. BUT, it’s times like this when hope must emerge as the most invaluable of words.
DJ Khaled will tell you straight. If you voted leave, you definitely played yourself.”
